Dermal Fillers

    What are dermal fillers?

Dermal filler are medical products that are injected into the skin to add volume where needed to correct aesthetic issues. They are usually used to correct deep lines and wrinkles as well as “off-label” uses. The goal of filler treatment is to leave the patient with a more youthful, rested, healthier appearance while maintaining a natural look. Although primarily used in the face they may have occasional use in other areas (novel uses). These products are to be injected only by highly trained medical personnel in medical offices. The fillers are injected at various depths of the skin or just below the skin based on each product’s properties. They are usually injected using very small bore needles and recently special cannulas have been used.

There are literally hundreds of fillers available around the world. In the United States we are limited to only a handful of products which have a proven track record of safety and efficacy. There is debate whether any of the other products offer any substantial advantage over those currently being used daily. Almost all of the commonly used products we have available are non-animal based and do not necessitate the patient being skin tested prior to treatment. This means that you can be treated as soon as you decide to proceed. To make treatment more comfortable many of the products are currently available with lidocaine (an anesthetic agent) in the product, others may have it mixed in prior to injection reducing the need for additional needle sticks to add local anesthesia.

All dermal fillers are contraindicated for patients with known sensitivities to the filler material; and history of severe allergy or anaphylaxis; and bleeding disorders.
